ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)
reported that at least 50 local business establishments are not granting 13th
month pay to their employees.
This was disclosed by Ian Lahi, Labor Employment Officer of DOLE
Zamboanga City Field Office, citing this was discovered during inspection and
monitoring conducted by the agency’s Labor Law Compliance Officer.
Lahi said they have also received 30 complaints concerning non-payment
of the 13th month by the employers to the employees.
Lahi said they will take appropriate actions to ensure employers comply
with President Decree (P.D.) No. 851 that grants yearend benefits to the
workers.
P.D 851 requires employers to pay 13th month pay to their rank and file
employees, regardless of the nature of their employment and irrespective of the
methods by which their wages are paid, provided they worked for at least one
month during a calendar year.
The 13th month pay shall not be less than one-twelfth (1/12) of the
total basic salary earned by an employee in a calendar year.
Lahi appealed the employers to release the 13th month pay of their
employees on or before December 15 in time for the yuletide season. (PNA)
