PAGALUNGAN, Maguindanao – A suspected IS linked terrorist was
arrested during a 15-minute firefight in Barangay Tunggol here Friday
afternoon, the Army said.
Three civilians were also wounded in a clash at 3 p.m. when members of
the Bagnsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) under Abu Torayfe, opened fire
on soldiers of 7th Infantry Battalion on foot patrol along the river bank.
Colonel Alfredo del Rosario, 602nd Infantry Brigade commander, said firefight erupted when BIFF members, led by Gapang Sapal, a lieutenant of Abu Torayfe, fired at elements of the 7th Infantry Battalion who were pursuing gunmen on board a motorboat.
He told reporters that the soldiers were checking on reports about the transport of improvised bombs from Sultan sa Barongis to Kabacan, North Cotabato, the target of bombing.
Del Rosario said soldiers arrested Mohamid Kambilan, a follower of Abu Torayfe, leader of a BIFF faction believed to be behind the Isulan twin bombings last week.
Three civilians living near the river were injured and rushed by soldiers to a hospital in Kabacan, North Cotabato.
Del Rosario said the soldiers recovered two Armalite rifles, a Garand rifle and a cal. 45 pistol at the encounter site. No IED was recovered.
The highway linking North Cotabato and Maguindanao was shut down at 3 p.m. and reopened at past 5 p.m. Motorists, however, were advised to avoid traveling at night. ( From NDBC/By: Ferdinand H Cabrera)
