The National Youth Commission vehemently condemns the violent dispersal of the protest marchers representing the Lumad tribal community in front of the US Embassy, along Roxas Boulevard yesterday.
“We
strongly condemn this heartless move on the part of the police authorities to
disperse the protest marchers whose cause is a legitimate concern. We decry
that the culture of violence is prevalent among those who are supposed to be
the harbingers of peace,” NYC Chairperson Aiza Seguerra lamented.
Earlier
reports mentioned that several protesters were seriously injured when a police
van rammed into protesters as a move to disperse them.
“However,
we commend the NCRPO for its immediate action to relieve the nine members of
the Manila Police Department (MPD) from their posts, including PO2 Franklin
Kho, the driver of the police van that rammed and run over the protesters,”
Seguerra added.
It is
also interesting to note that Police Senior Superintendent Marcelino Pedrozo,
the ground commander at the rally who allegedly ordered the violent dispersal
was also relieved to pave the way for an impartial investigation of the case.
“We
fervently hope and pray that the victims will be given all the necessary
assistance as we also call on organizers
of protest rallies to be always cautious about safety and security and try its
best to resort to peaceful means to resolve issues being raised so as to avoid
similar incidents in the future," Seguerra ended.(posted by Becky D. de Asis - the redline news)
