BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — A mother died and two minors were injured when
their house was buried by loosened soil after a riprap collapsed in a
subdivision in Barangay Kias here on Wednesday afternoon.
In a report submitted to the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD)
Cordillera, Police Chief Inspector Jethro Moog, head of the City Public Safety
Battalion (CPSC) of the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO), said the incident
happened around 3:45 p.m. at Block 34, Lot 14, Pinesville Subdivision.
Killed in the incident was Jemma Mendoza, 38. She was retrieved by
barangay officials and brought to the Baguio General Hospital and Medical
Center (BGHMC) where she died.
Moog reported that the two minors — one-year-old Nathaniel de Jesus,
daughter of Jemma; and Lenary de Jesus, niece of Jemma’s husband, suffered
injuries.
Moog said Jemma was pinned-down by a concrete post when rocks and soil
buried their house after the riprap on an adjacent property being constructed
collapsed.
Jason Wanna, a resident in the area and one of the first responders,
thought they heard a thundering noise because of the rain. They saw the house
of the victim already destroyed and buried after neighbors started shouting and
rushed to the scene.
Heavy rains fell in this city since Monday until the early morning of
Tuesday.
