ZAMBOANGA CITY, PHILIPPINES - The Department of Social Welfare and
Development-9 (DSWD-9) sent 15,000 food packs for families displaced by the
ongoing fighting in Marawi City.
Ivan Eric Salvador, DSWD regional information officer, said the family
food packs have arrived on Saturday, June 17, at one of the relief operation
centers in Linamon, Lanao del Norte.
Salvador said they sent the food packs on Friday as augmentation to the
relief operations for the Marawi City displaced families as requested by the
DSWD central office.
He said that each family food pack contains six kilos rice; four corned
beef cans; four cans sardines; and half dozen sachet of three-in-one coffee.
He disclosed DSWD data showed that there were 68,109 families
consisting of 332,582 individuals have been displaced by the fighting in Marawi
City as of Thursday, June 15.
The fighting broke out when the Islamic State for Iraq and Syria
(ISIS)-inspired Maute group members went berserk and occupied several
establishments when the government troops raided on May 23 the hideout of Abu
Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon.
The Maute group members are providing protection to Hapilon, who
pledged allegiance to the ISIS.
Fighting continues to date as the government security forces continue
its effort to flush out the remaining Maute group members still holed out in
Marawi City. (RGAAG/PNA) posted by Becky D. de Asis- The Redline News PH
