MANILA, Philippines - MalacaƱang on Thursday expressed condolences to the
relatives of the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire even as it assured that the
Philippine government is taking all necessary steps to assist Filipinos who
were injured in the huge conflagration that ravaged the west London tower
block.
“We condole with those who have lost families and friends in the
Grenfell fire and we take special note of the special needs of Filipinos who
also were affected by the conflagration,” Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella
said at a Palace briefing.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), through the Philippine
Embassy in London, has confirmed that some Filipinos are among those injured by
the fire at Grenfell Tower. The Embassy is closely monitoring the situation and
is ready to provide assistance to all Filipino fire victims,” Abella said.
The massive fire that ripped through Grenfell Tower, a 27-story
apartment block in west London, started before dawn Wednesday.
Latest reports said that 12 people were confirmed dead with dozens
injured, including an unspecified number of Filipinos.
The Philippine Embassy in London said in a statement that “a number of
them are in the emergency shelters at St. Clement's Church, the St. Francis of
