Gov't agencies urged to fly flags in half-mast to honor fallen troops, civilians in Marawi


MANILA, Philippines - The Armed Forces of the Philippines is requesting all government agencies to fly their flags in half-mast starting Tuesday in honor of the fallen troops who gave their all to free Marawi City from the clutches of the remaining Maute Group terrorists and the civilians who died from atrocities committed by the lawless elements.

This was bared by AFP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla in an statement Monday.

"Other agencies of government were also requested to fly their flags at half mast tomorrow (Tuesday), the first official working day of the week," he added.

This is in addition to the observance of a Day of Silence and Prayer for the fallen troops and civilians which started Sunday and will end Monday.

"In addition to observing a Day of Silence and Prayer for our heroes and the innocents who died due to terrorist atrocities in Marawi, we also had a nationwide tribute in cooperation with all the major networks in TV and radio to all the fallen. Shortly after, we flew all flags in all military camps at half mast in salute," he added.

As of this posting, there are 58 government troops confirmed death and around 120 wounded in the fighting which is now entering its fourth week.

While the Maute Group death toll is placed at 191 terrorists.

Thirteen of the recent losses were Marine troopers who were killed in a major engagement which lasted for some 14 hours, erupted between Marine units and Maute Group terrorists at Barangay Lilot Madaya in Marawi City Friday.

Fighting started 3:30 a.m. and ended 5 p.m. of June 9. Around 40 were also reported wounded.


"Our men served with honor and we ask you to join us in prayer for the repose of their souls, strength for the bereaved families in this moment of grief and for peace in our land," Padilla concluded. (Priam F. Nepomuceno/PNA)
