MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippines has captured three gold medals in the Thailand Open Track and Field Championships that ended Thursday at the Thammasat University Sports Complex in Bangkok, Thailand.
The men's 4x400 meters relay team of Edgardo Alejan Jr., Michael del
Prado, Joan Caido and Archand Christian Bagsit clocked 3 minutes and 11.70
seconds to win the event over South Korea (silver) and Thailand (bronze).
It was the first time for the four athletes to run as a team in the
tournament that served as their tune-up for the 29th Southeast Asian Games in
Malaysia in August.
Mark Harris Diones of Camarines Sur and Janry Ubas (in photo) of
Cagayan de Oro delivered the other two golds for the Philippines.
Diones won the men's triple jump event with a 16.13-meter leap. His
Philippine record is 16.70 meters. Ronne Malipay settled for the bronze with
his leap of 15.85 meters.
Ubas registered 7.78 meters to pocket the gold medal in the men's long
jump. Last week, he jumped 7.88 meters in the trials conducted by the
Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA) at the Philsports in
Pasig City to erase the SEA Games record of Henry Dagmil (7.87 meters) set during
the 2007 SEAG in Thailand.
Aries Toledo also contributed a silver medal when he finished second in
the men's decathlon with a new Philippine record of 7,127 points, eclipsing the
record of Ramil Cid (7,069 points) established during the 2015 Philippine
National Games.
The PATAFA has lined up four more international tournaments for its SEA
Games-bound athletes and training pool members. The SEA Games will be held in
